The numbers: 475 hours fished=1601 smallmouth bass and 154 'other' fish. Up from 1486 smallmouth bass and 147 other fish in 2010.

29 different rivers were fished on 95 occasions.

204 smallmouth bass were over 16", up from 146 in 2010.

Got to my target location about 11, suited and fishing by 11:15. It was cold with some breezes temps in the 23F-28F. Water was up and moderate fast. Visibility was maybe 18".

I crossed at several riffles during the day. Cleated felt worked fine. I was dressed warm, even had White Stripes Ipoded up to keep me occupied if the fishing was slow.

On the water by 12-12:30. Brought the baitcaster and 1/2 oz jig for some of the deep, slow stuff.
Lost a big fish on the first drift, surfaced and flopped. Dejected because I should have tied some new fly jigs up without sickle hooks. Paid the price.

Float down paddle up. Picked up this  18.25" smallmouth which went berserk underwater. 

Picked  a dink after the fly bobbed over a rock. Was trying to work this ledge without  being able to see it. Mixed results. Later the float dunked and a big fish of  some sort was on, swam hard without budging, then came free. Felt really good   . Took my kayak along to fish now that there is some flow in the streams. I  learned from the last time out with Matt, pitching Fnf of high banks was ****.  Better to float and have room to cast. The Natural Resources Commission will conduct two public hearings on proposed changes to the black bass fishing rule, one on Oct. 11 in Spencer, the other on Oct. 17 in Peru. The term “black bass” refers to smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and spotted bass.

This year we were at Tippecanoe State Park near Winamac, IN August 26-28th. Thursday to Sunday. Lots of great times, yummy food, and new favorite lawn game "Kubb Spiel". I drew a circle on the map. The circle was to match my route downstream one flow into a bigger flow, upstream 2 miles to the bridge where Fishbike awaited me in the woods.

Something slows progress. I did get to the water today just before 10, with bike up one bridge in the woods.


Water was looking sweet. Low and clear, lots of shade. 

Started out with Sammy 100, Wakecrank, crank, tube . All they hit was the Sammy, so I stuck with it. For a while it was all dinks, but later the big girls woke up. Second cast was the largest of the day, just under 17".

Mostly wakebaits, with tubes in the rootwads to pick up a few more. Was at 21 smallies in the first hour. Tore 'em up.

Noticed smallies would try to grab the bait away from hooked fish, so let the hooked fish play a couple times to go for doubles. It worked:

Pulled a lamprey off one fish's head, thought I had severed or crushed its spine, but it swam off. Leech on my shin when I got home. Took about 45 minutes to stop the bleeding (leeches secrete an anti coagulant as well as a local anesthetic.

Walked a little ways noticed my RC's bill had broken.

Water had come down and cleared up to maybe 24" visibility. At the first riffle, my crankbait got nailed by a 13" smallmouth bass. Guess they didn't have to warm up much. 

Lots of walking today to get to the holes. 

Had a large fish flop off at my feet when he hooked my crank on a root. Looked in the 18-19" range.

She had a great time chewing bark and leading the way. 

Fished an inside bend with some large chunk rocks. Water was up and pumping with maybe 14-18" of visibilty. Green. The colder weather had done a great job choking off the flow of rain into the rivers and water had cleared up nicely.

I did get on the board in December, only just, with 11 bass back on December 5th! I landed smallmouth bass  in 22 different streams in Indiana  in 2010.

So far, I have my eye on a Shimano Curado.

I think I want a faster reel (7.0.1) rather than slower (5's). But maybe I am missing something here. Do I need more power? I fished several large pools. Water looked great. Visibility was 18"+ with great light penetration. Air temps in the high 30's to mid 40's.

Smallies were pretty active, saw one chasing a rock bass out of the water and they both jumped. Zeroed in on that spot and started pulling them in.

Downstream cast with a white Wolkabuzz. Just got to 20" by the point of the chin. Really, this bass had a Marlon Brando/Benito Mussolini chin. Nice fight on 7'-6" rod from 30 yards out.


Only ended with 6 bass, losing one that looked about 16". Got tired and went home. Started off slow when I stepped in the water. Found low, stained with algae, next to no flow. Decided to throw a Sammy 100 and cover a stretch that has produced 60+ smallies in 7 or 8 hours in the past. Checked for some other bites, but it was pretty much dead until it got closer to dark. Only picked up a couple of skinny dinks and a 13" who blasted and missed Sammy out of a rootwad. Really. It is ridiculous. Sammy 100 and tubes. Got out to a 21-7 lead on MC, then my tube feel deserted me. 

We found several wide, long, straight, shallow silty pools that seem to be the depositories from such eroded classics:

Saving up my brownie points for one cataclysmic event. The INSA 2010 Camp and Fish. Basically, camp at a site, bs, eat well, drink well, bs, fish, be merry. It was great, met some great guys and enjoyed the companies of some old friends.

I hit one such creek this morning.

Water was cool early. Bass didn't want much movement.As it warmed up there were active smaller fish near what little current I could find. I used a Mega Bass propdarter. The bass thumbs. It became so painful, I actually didn't want to catch anymore smallies Saturday evening. Big bass that wouldn't quite give up when thumbed, twitching googs, dinks with their new sharp rows of tiny teeth. Blood started to seep through my tattered thumb pads. It hurts to touch.

Creek was just the right amount of water to bunch bass up. Stained with maybe 14" visibility I threw a new R2C wake crankbait.
