Dragged Mike out for some winter fishing New Year's Eve. As we pulled up, the river looked good. When I looked again there were ice flows everywhere! Turns out the ice had just broken up. We did find an ice free go to winter hole, but with the 4" visibity. No luck.
On sunday I headed south to avoid rainfall path. Left Mike at home. River was flowing at 700 CFS. Was hoping it was clearing fast as the temperature dropped. No such luck. Visibility started at about 6". Float moved early and something that appeared to be a 5" Goog flopped off.
Kept with it, changing depths patiently, then dragging a worm and tube. No luck at the first hole. Walked down to the second, where I tried a 3/16th OZ black maribou jig. Working the bait painfully slow and parallel to the shore, I finally got bit! Relief. A 14" bright yellow and white smallmouth bass came to hand.
On the board in 2011. The timing was off. I would have loved to have been out today.
