At the end of January, I moved from Indianapolis, IN to Bloomington, IN. Further away from the best smallmouth bass rivers in the state. Why? The fishing certainly isn't better. The soil isn't as fertile. I met a woman. A fantastic woman. Large life changes and not much fishing. When one considers the deep freeze that locked up rivers and creeks... There isn't much good water near Btown. I knew of one micro flow far from town and set out, without waders or kayaks.

Congrats on the move man. Women will make you do some crazy things! Hey, just wanted to see if I could get some info out of you. I have been out quite a few times, and have not had the success I am used to this time of year. The water is warm enough (60+ degrees), but the pre-spawn bite just isn't there like it normally is. What have you been seeing as far as patterns go? I don't know if it's because of the harsh winter or not, but I have not got on a suspending jerkbait bite at all (which is my normal bait of choice this time of year). Honestly, I am having a tough time establishing a pattern. I wondered what you normally use this time of year, and what kind of patterns you were seeing. Any information would be helpful. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteJosh- Indeed. Indeed. Could be many factors. Cold Winter could have reduced bass populations. Colder temps have the smaller fish eating less frequently depressing numbers. Colder temps had bass staying in Winter areas longer, so they weren't where you expected them to be. Many different things could be happening. Certainly, fishing was better numberswise for me in early March when it was cold and predictable. Now, I'd be throwing a tube along current seams, a waking crankbait shallow, and a wide wobble crankbait. All near seams
